One of the coolest things about all the weird electric cars we found on Alibaba is that a lot of them look like they come from something you wouldn’t expect to see on the street. Ride a tiger-shaped bus or a house on wheels. You might also get things that aren’t technically vehicles but shouldn’t be near a real road. I hope to do just that by getting one of these electric bumper cars for cruising the streets of my neighborhood.
Welcome to this week’s amazingly bizarre Alibaba electric car, bumper car edition!
Here’s the problem – when I was a kid, bumper cars had giant sticks out. I had to run around the creepy cheese grater floor while a metal clothesline with a tin foil shoehorn set off arc sparks overhead.
A classic kids ride.
But young people these days will never know the thrill of amusement park rides.
That’s because a new breed of bumper cars is hitting sad, depleted, cash-strapped amusement parks that are barely holding on. It may not hiss or crackle like the model, but it does have one redeeming quality: it can drive anywhere.
You can run as long as you want without being trapped in the Thunderdome of a designated electric bumper car. Or at least as long as the battery lasts.
The bumper car uses a 48V system combined with a 500W motor. That means it’s about as powerful as your average e-bike, which can reach 20 miles per hour (32 km/h).
Unfortunately, these methods rarely result in a third of that speed. But do you know what happens when you slow it down? Torque should spike. I mean, these suckers could probably moonlight as plane tractors.
Sure, you won’t be able to move quickly with a top speed of 6 mph (10 km/h), but you’ll definitely arrive in style.
