Ever since I was in college, I’ve been planning my daughter’s Harry Potter birthday party. No, but that’s when I discovered the magical world and every page I read while sitting in my London apartment brought me closer to where I am today. I was so excited to share Harry Potter with my daughter when I started . .
Harry Potter Birthday Party Ideas
The biggest challenge in creating the ultimate Harry Potter birthday party is narrowing down your ideas. There are so many magical and wonderful elements from the book that make a lovely addition to a birthday party and my Pinterest board is full of crazy. I had to cut things off because the fractions are so limited.
One of the things I absolutely wanted to do was open a Hogwarts class. I had her daughter help me choose a schedule of classes and plan for divination, herbalism, charms and potions. (She vetoed Defense Against the Dark Arts.)
Harry Potter Birthday Party Divination Class
To bring divination to life, I designed the Harry Potter Fortune tellers (also known as Cootie Catchers). The class was easy, mess free and perfect for our group of 10 year old girls.
The girls sat on the sofa while I explained that they were going to take a magic class, since it was their first class. I was surprised at how many girls were unfamiliar with the world of Harry Potter. But I assured them they didn’t have to know anything about Harry Potter to enjoy it.
I printed the Harry Potter fortune teller on brown paper that looks like parchment to give it the correct Harry Potter look.
Free Harry Potter Fortune Teller is now printable.
I knew girls finish the fortune teller at different speeds, so I do you like harry potter more than games so that they can play too. It was a big hit!Download free printables HerePrinted on vellum paper for a more Harry Potter look. I used this paper for several things at this party. It looked really cool.
The girls had so much fun with this free “Would You Rather” printout. Downloading is highly recommended. She played with it while eating dinner, and her daughter took it to school the next day.
Harry Potter Birthday Party Charm Class
We all love to pretend we’re casting spells, right? So we sent the kids to a charm class to learn one of the first spells Harry Potter and friends learned: Wingardium Leviosa. I learned
The first thing we need to create this class is a wand. For this, I handcrafted a wand using cooking chopsticks, hot glue, and acrylic paint. I had such a great time making the cane. This craft can be done very easily or very elaborately. I copied a lot of movie wands, including Harry Potter, Hermione, Ron, Dumbledore, Ginny, and McGonagall.
I edited and wrote wand tutorial Create a pencil wand. To make a full-size wand, just use the same tutorial and purchase 18 inch chopsticks.
Charm class was very simple. We inflated a balloon for each child and asked them to chant Wingardium Leviosa while trying to keep the balloon in the air using only a wand. Two jump ropes were used as start/finish lines and raced approximately 20 feet.
The challenge was a little tricky as there was a light breeze that day and the balloon flew off as soon as it hit the grass. Everyone was smiling and one girl made it to the finish line. It was a quick class, but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Harry Potter Birthday Party Herbology Class
I was very happy with the idea for this class and even more glad that the girls liked it. Also known as succulents in the Muggle world.
I found a cute owl succulent pot on Amazon and bought some mini succulents and potting soil at Home Depot. The girls took turns adding potting soil to the owl’s pot, repotting the ‘mandrake’ and watering it with a medicated dropper.
The girls were very happy with the potted mandrakes and were thrilled to find that these were also party favors to take home.
Tip – This class was held outdoors so we didn’t have to worry about making a mess.
Harry Potter Birthday Party Potions Class
What’s the most exciting potion a group of 9 and 10 year old girls can make? Slime!
The potions class provided the girls with a variety of fun add-ins and supplies for making slime. This was the girls’ favorite class.
What surprised me again was that there were many girls who had not yet made slime. So it was a little more oversight than I expected. But there were so many happy laughs that it made yet another great party favor.
Slime Potion Ingredients:
I bought a black plastic bowl (Party City) that resembled a cauldron for the girls to mix the slime in. And I gave them a plastic wand (aka a plastic knife) to stir the slime. Once finished, we gave everyone a plastic container to take home the slime. These are the perfect size for storing slime.

My daughter decided she wanted her Harry Potter birthday invitation to look like a train ticket to Hogwarts. I did so. The ticket is my design, printed on cardboard and cut out like a ticket.
We had a lot of requests for invitations. My customized invitation Etsy shop. Thank you for your cooperation!

To transform our home into a Hogwarts castle for parties, transform the dining area into a grand hall, nod to the castle portraits, fly keys, and Honey Dukes and Weeping Myrtle hanging in the bathroom. It included a display.
Party-goers were welcomed with the Hogwarts crest fluttering on a banner at the front door.
Inside the front door, they found themselves in a hallway on the third floor. A hallway that was off-limits in Sorcerer’s Stone. (It was also a great way to keep the kids out of the playroom for the day.
The flying key is very simple, but it was very impactful. I bought these cheap keys on Amazon and used this printable for my wings. Tip – I printed it on vellum paper so it had a cool translucent look and I could see the wing pattern from both sides. Very beautiful.
I turned my family gallery wall into a Hogwarts professor gallery wall. I found all the professor’s images online and cropped them to a square to fit in my frame.
Perhaps the most dramatic decoration was the floating candles that hung above the Great Hall. I liked it. I used toilet paper rolls, hot glue, white acrylic paint, white paper, battery-powered tealights, and monofilament to create the look.
I wanted it to look like my guests were dining in a saloon, so I used these plastic gold-rimmed plates and served portions of Butterbeer and Polyjuice in these plastic mugs.
Recipe coming soon.
Using the same wings as the Flying Key, I turned the Ferrero Rocher Candy into the Golden Snitch.
And of course, a happy birthday banner in house colors.

The coolest party element was the Daily Prophet with animated Harry Potter photos on Honeydukes displays. I wish I could make a tutorial because it’s really spectacular, but he basically hacked the promos he received his player to play a loop of the movie. Then, found online by Daily, he edited Prophet’s image to keep it the right size and put it all in the frame.
Neither children nor adults could understand this detail.

Harry Potter Birthday Party Favors
I didn’t mean to do a lot of favors for this party, but it all came together so it was only natural for the kids to make something to take home.
Harry Potter party favors include:
- handmade cane
- mandrake (succulent plant)
- Slime
- harry potter fortune teller
- Bertie Bot’s Every Flavor Beans from Honeydukes (actually just jelly beans)
- chocolate frog
Inside the box of chocolate frogs, I put one of my favorite DIYs to make my own chocolate frog card for the birthday girl.I don’t have a great photo of it, but on one side is a picture of her standing in front of Hogwarts (Universal) and on the other side is information about her.Editable Frog Chocolate Her card can be downloaded Here.
Harry Potter Free Printables
I used a lot of free printables I found online so I didn’t have to create everything, but I still designed many myself.

To make Moaning Myrtle look translucent and watery, I printed it on vellum paper and then taped it to the toilet seat.
