The baker, who makes trendy, retro-inspired cakes, owes her inspiration to other small businesses in the city and has big plans for the future.
Amy Humphries launched Virgo Bakery last July after meeting another Norwich baker.
Now, six months later, she says the work and support of people like her has helped her grow her business.
“I’ve always baked and decorated cakes, but I thought it was a pipe dream until the lockdown.
“When I saw what other people were doing, I realized that I could try it in parallel with my own work.
“Later, I met Maggie from the Frå.kost bakery. She gave me some great words of encouragement to encourage me.
“Norwich’s other small businesses have been very supportive. The city is big enough that there’s a place for everyone, but it’s small enough that it retains a community feel.
“I am amazed at how fast Virgo is growing. I feel like I have no choice but to move up.”

Inspired by retro cakes, Miss Humphreys has found a niche in colorful and trendy styles to offer something new.
“I love the retro look and nobody seems to be doing it in Norfolk,” she said.
“Customers have told us before that they had to travel to London for this style of cake, so it’s nice to be able to offer something closer to home.
“The old-fashioned, colorful look is back in style. It’s a little extra and fancy, but I think it’s super cool and fun.”
“It’s the kind of cake you dreamed of when you were a kid. It looks really special.
Virgo currently has a menu of five flavors (Victoria Sponge, Double Chocolate, Lemon, Red Velvet and Cherry Bakewell), with other flavors available upon request.
Miss Humphries, who now works for the UEA, is already making plans for the future.
“My whimsical idea is to own a bakery and decor store. Sell really nice supplies and do workshops.”
Virgo Bakery accepts orders via direct message on Instagram, and cake prices vary by size. Regular celebratory cakes start at £50.
