Union County, Illinois (KFVS) – Southern Illinois orchards are celebrating their 150th anniversary this year.
The Rendellman Orchard, near the village of Union Company on Alto Pass, celebrates 150 years of farming and food production in the area.
The orchard was founded by John and Isabel Rendelman in 1873 and is still run by the Rendelman family, according to a statement from the Illinois Southernmost Visitor Authority. 5th generation, Wayne and Michelle Salles.
This orchard is known for apples and peaches. Lt. Gov. Julianna Stratton, from Chicago, Illinois, said Rendelman’s produce travels 349 miles north of her hometown and is enjoyed by many in Cook County, according to a release. He has 5.2 million residents who buy from supermarkets and farmers’ markets.
“For 150 years, Rendleman Orchards has honored the tradition of fostering ties to the land by providing food,” added Lt. Gov. Stratton. “Illinois is proud that their commitment to nourishing and growing our state has created this inspiring legacy.”
Rendleman Orchards covers 850 acres and is nestled in the hills of Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois, according to the release.
