109 of President Richard M. Nixon andth It’s his birthday this Monday, so I thought I’d share the story of when I met him in Philadelphia.
At the time, he was still in the White House, and reporters like me and the Senate Watergate Committee were hot on his tail.
I gained resilience as a news reporter and then as a PR person chasing the dramatic day Nixon was in Philadelphia.
my editor Philadelphia Inquirer I had to overcome their reluctance to send me to talks that required interviews with people who didn’t want to talk to me. Sometimes I was literally knocked down, like when I was an ambitious young reporter who tried to
I will do almost anything to get a story. Especially from the president!
First, I greeted the President when he arrived at the station with a large group of other reporters. Nixon and Secretary of State Kissinger were the first to board the new high-speed rail line between Washington, DC and Philadelphia.
I was the only one who asked him if he liked the ride. He turned to me and said how impressed he was with how quickly he got to Philadelphia. Then he got blown away.
When I called the front desk, my editor told me to follow him wherever he went. So I went to wait for him.
When he arrived, I gave him a brief interview and was shown to a seat on the private balcony. Nixon was in that private booth when the concert started.
Suddenly several shots were fired. Oh, God!
They came from the direction the President of the United States (OMG) sits on a balcony overlooking a stage reminiscent of President Lincoln at Ford’s Theater (OMG).
I immediately started running towards it when I was tackled by two giants who told me they were Secret Service agents protecting the president.
I screamed, trying to pry myself out of their tight grip as images of Ford’s Theater flashed through my mind. I heard gunshots.”
One of the officers shouted back. It starts with a cannon fire! ”
