Lexington, Kentucky (WKYT) – WKYT celebrates a very special West Virginia native.
WKYT’s Garrett Wymer’s mother, Kim Wymer, won the official West Virginia birthday cake contest.
She made Van’s blackberry skillet cake. The cake was named after her grandmother.
It is offered annually on June 20th to commemorate the statehood of West Virginia.

Mrs. Weimer showcased the winning recipe at the state’s 159th birthday celebration.
“It’s an honor to welcome Kim to the West Virginia Day ceremony today. I congratulate her on everything. What a wonderful recipe,” said First Lady Justice. “Everyone in my office has had the chance to eat cake, and not only was it delicious, but it also reminded me of West Virginia.”
In addition to her recipe becoming the state’s official birthday cake, Weimer was awarded a $500 Visa gift card, a custom cake platter, and a certificate as the grand prize winner of the contest.
The Blackberry Skillet Cake was named Best of the Best out of seven outstanding cake recipes that were selected as contest finalists.
