This week marks the 87th anniversary of the first publication of our predecessor, the Northern Virginia Sun. The date of the first issue was December 12, 1935.
Times have changed a lot since then (newspapers don’t pay much 🙂 ), but local news sources are still important.
For fancy, I went to Al Gore’s Amazing Internet and looked up celebrities who were born in 1935 and are still with us at age 87 (or 86 and up if they were born later in the year). 87 years old).

Big names like Julie Andrews, Woody Allen, Johnny Mathis, Donald Sutherland, Mary Berry (for UK Bake Off fans), Sandy Koufax, Phil Donahue, Steve Lawrence.
Happy 87th Anniversary, and Happy 87th Anniversary to us!
No dull moments: Right before the holidays, it’s a time when everyone is trying to attend events and those of us who really feel the urge to cover the news get pulled in all directions.
There are 3 events today alone before noon: Arlington’s Optimism Club’s Annual Christmas Breakfast. Monthly meeting of the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority. Forecasts for next year’s area-wide home sales and prices from the Northern Virginia Real Estate Association.
can i do that? Are there bears in the forest? (I think so, but I’ve never gotten close enough to find out.)
A visit from Eleanor, and I’m sure she was Swell Anole! Speaking of service clubs, just as I was an optimist just a few paragraphs ago, here’s a reference from Sun’s local history file dating back to 1942 this week.
Yes, it’s fun-loving December 80 years ago.
It was apparently becoming an annual ritual for First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to attend the Arlington Kiwanis Club’s annual Christmas party for underprivileged children. She had done it before, according to the week’s newspaper, and she was also on the guest list for this year’s event.
I’m glad she was able to succeed – the first lady’s busy schedule became even busier as the war continued as she traveled around the world. I had to.
