“I still don’t think it hit me,” she said of the success of her song. I had to sing along. All in all, that song completely changed my life.”
She added that she initially thought “Birthday Cake” might be “too specific” because she wrote it for a close friend who was mourning the death of her mother. It’s pretty amazing,” she continued.
Conrique says she’s been “writing all along” and has noticed an interesting pattern in her upcoming releases. “I realized that the music that came out, when put in the right order, was literally a breakup story, like a whole relationship story,” she explained. I want to do something like order myself and what their breakup was like. They can tell their own story.”
The up-and-coming teen star also opened up about working with legendary producer and songwriter Max Martin. “He came in and said, ‘Can you help me sing? I didn’t know what to say,'” she recalls. “He said, ‘Okay, let me hear it.’ I said, ‘Oh no, we don’t have a recording of that song.’He said, “Oh, sing for me,” so I [gasp]I was so nervous! ”
Overall, she concluded that working with Martin and the other songwriters helped her “grow up” a lot.
