LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Over the weekend, the Louisville Zoo will host birthday parties for two of the city’s most beloved animals.
On Saturday, guests will be invited to celebrate the birthdays of Punch, the Asian elephant, who turns 53 this year, and Kananik, the polar bear, who turns 12.
Guests sing “Happy Birthday” to both animals and receive special enrichments and items on their birthdays.
Punch arrived at the Louisville Zoo on November 28, 1973, when he was three years old, and hails from the Southwick Zoo in Massachusetts.
Kanick made national headlines in 2011 after he was found separated from his mother and brother on the North Slope of Alaska. U.S. Fish and Wildlife launched a rescue operation and was brought into the Louisville Zoo on June 28, 2011.
The Punch Celebration will take place at 1:30 PM in the Africa Zone, while the Kanik Celebration will take place at 2:15 PM at Glacier Run.
Louisville Zoo supporters can also purchase a new limited edition shirt featuring a modern bear design through January 23rd. zoo websiteProceeds from this shirt will help support over 1,100 animals in zoos.
