It’s New Year’s resolution time. A time to expect more change than the calendar.
Many may resolve to save money or organize their homes. If the ad I recently ran to catch up with the latest season of ‘Letterkenny’ is any indication, many people resolve to find relationships through targeted dating apps.
The most common solutions come in the form of diet and exercise. During the holiday season, many of us eat more sweets and often spend less time exercising due to social obligations.
I’m not a big believer in the “new year, new me” mentality. We are who we are and we shouldn’t try to change that, but we believe the start of a new year is the perfect time to build something new. Habit.
Exercise and nutrition solutions can be difficult. Diets can quickly turn into messy eating, and trying to be “perfect” can lead to some pretty dark times.
Short-term programs are often worse than long-term diets, as they often ask you to start from scratch with a 21-, 30-, or 75-day plan. becomes a never-ending cycle of starting a abbreviated diet, falling off the wagon before any given amount of time has passed, and starting over.
That means you don’t have to make a specific plan to start eating nutritious foods. It really starts with small habits.
Adding a bag of steamed veggies to dinner, planning your meals for the week, and scheduling your workouts are all positive ways to add healthy habits without feeling tired.
Another easy way to boost your nutrients is with protein powders. The standard way to use this supplement is by mixing it into shakes, but there are hundreds of recipes that incorporate protein powder into baked goods and other foods.
One of my favorite ways is to mix it into oatmeal.
A big mistake I made the first time I tried protein oats was that I added extra water.
I usually make two packs of instant oats and add less water than recommended for one pack. For the first time, with extra water, my oats became very soupy.
The added powder did not require any added liquid. Therefore, we recommend adding an equal amount of liquid to get the oats of your dreams, then adding a splash or two until the consistency is just right.
A quick and easy breakfast can add protein to get your day started. Protein helps people stay fuller longer and build muscle.
