Louisville, Kentucky (TCD) — A 25-year-old father and 23-year-old girlfriend are charged after a 5-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries in an allegation of child abuse.
At approximately 4:30 pm on Sunday, January 8, Kentucky State Police said they were alerted to a 5-year-old boy being brought into Baptist Health Hardin. The child was reportedly airlifted to Norton Children’s Hospital for serious injuries.
According to court documents obtained by WDRB-TV, the child suffered multiple cardiac arrests during transportation.

According to WDRB, doctors told officials that the victims needed to be given medication to keep their blood pressure elevated.
According to police, the child’s father, Clovis Smith, left the hospital before police arrived, but was later encountered by officers. reportedly admitted to abusing
Smith told authorities that he grabbed the victim’s arm, sat on his buttocks, blocked the door, hit the boy with his buttocks and locked him in the bedroom, WDRB reports.
Rain reportedly confessed to dragging the victim’s arm because he stole the birthday cake. According to WDRB, Layne once pushed a victim into a toilet while urinating, she said, causing her to fall to the ground and hit her eye.
Additionally, Laing told authorities she saw her boyfriend stand over the boy and beat him.
According to court documents obtained by WDRB, police recovered a photo from Laing’s Google Photos account, revealing the boy standing against his will and kneeling on rice.
When police asked Smith what happened before the victim was taken to the hospital, he reportedly found the boy unresponsive. He said he concluded he vomited and passed out after drinking the rubbing alcohol that had been left behind.
Smith did not call 911, but allegedly called Layne, who was at her place of work. The couple reportedly took the boy to the hospital when she arrived from her job.
On the way there, Laing told authorities that Smith had given her a “gaze.” she said it was “oh [EXPLETIVE]I killed him,” reports the WDRB.
Police said Layne and Smith were arrested and charged with first-degree criminal abuse of a victim under the age of 12.
